From 28–30 October, the IFLA (International Federation of Landscape Architects) World Congress took place in Hong Kong, an international congress bringing together landscape architects from around the world. This year’s theme was ‘Liminal Landscapes: Shifting Boundaries of Watersheds and Coastlines’.
During the congress, the IFLA Global Landscape Architecture Awards were presented. The awards were presented during the gala dinner on Friday evening, 30 October. H+N+S was nominated and won with its Ooijen-Wanssum Area Development project in the ‘Resilience and Disaster Risk Reduction’ category.
The Ooijen-Wanssum area development shows how flood safety can be combined with the development of an attractive and accessible natural landscape. By giving the River Meuse more room, restoring an old river channel and constructing two new high-water channels, an integrated area development has been created in which flood safety, nature, landscape and quality of life reinforce one another. The innovative dike designs that make use of the regional identity, focus on landscape integration and sustainable land use, and therefore also contribute to the project’s distinctive character.
