Spatial trainee

Stijn van de Ven

Stijn van de Ven is Spatial Trainee and Junior Landscape Designer at H+N+S since September 2025. He is an enthusiastic and collaborative designer. He is curious and committed to a future-oriented living environment grounded in its history.

Background

Stijn started out as a landscape gardener with an interest in garden design. This is where his ambition to become a landscape architect was born. He obtained his Bachelor's degree in Garden and Landscape Design from Van Hall Larenstein in 2022 and subsequently his Master's degree in Landscape Architecture from Wageningen University & Research in 2024. This gave Stijn a foundation of experience from his past as a landscape gardener, and during his bachelor's degree, he completed an internship at Feddes/Olthof (now LOF landscape).

The Spatial Traineeship Midden-Nederland is a partnership between H+N+S, Witteveen+Bos, Wing, and the Vallei en Veluwe Water Board. This means that Stijn changes his workspace every six months to explore the role of landscape architect and develop his position within the profession. He is also following the PEP program to obtain the title of landscape architect.

Interests

Landscape history

Every place has a history; you rarely start designing from a blank canvas. As a landscape designer, I am interested in cultural history. I wrote my master's thesis on the Royal Roads of William III van Oranje, which gave me the opportunity to further develop and cultivate this interest. Now I apply the conclusions from my graduation research in my work.

Water and Soil

If we want to work towards a future where we manage our landscape sustainably, we must reconnect with its natural aspects. Designing with soil and water as a base, provides tools for these sustainable developments, allowing natural processes to unfold and benefit from them. In my work, I always investigate how we can create space for these processes.
